The project presented two main parts: the assessment of the existing bridge and the detailed design of the new one following the Eurocodes.
The remaining portion of the bridge will utilize a span-by-span construction sequence with traditional falsework. The three first spans over the Cross River will be segmentally built in balanced cantilever to protect the natural environment, and to mitigate the impact on the riverbanks and the requirement for construction equipment. The new 403 m long structure over the Cross River is a continuous concrete box girder deck with six spans with lengths of 35+150+85+50+50+31 m. The bridge will replace a functionally obsolete single lane suspension bridge. This bridge is a critical part of the Bamenda-Enugu corridor that will become a main link between the two countries, and a key component of the Lagos-Mombasa Trans-African Highway. The contract also included the structural assessment of the existing suspension bridge built in the 1950s. Pedelta, as the lead design firm in a Joint Venture with Kedmor Engineers, was retained by the Ministries of Public Works of Nigeria and Cameroon for engineering services of the concept and detailed design for the new 1.5 km long road, which includes a new two-lane international bridge over the Cross River at the Cameroon-Nigeria Border in Ekok-Mfum. The project is funded by the African Development Bank.
